There’s Something New Under the Tree

Craig Johnson

More than fifteen years ago, when I first started writing the Walt Longmire series, Viking / Penguin informed me that I was going to need a website. Now, only people who understand my, and Walt’s, relationship with technology realize just how off-putting that thought was - I’d just gotten used to typing on a computer enough to write my first novel and now I had to design a website? Fortunately, I’d been teaching some classes at Sheridan College, and one of my students, Erin Guy, was proficient in the field and volunteered to take on the task of introducing Walt to the cyber-world. The materials we gave her to work with were a little rough, mostly photographs my wife and I had taken around the ranch. Erin was a wonder and patched together a marvelous site that I’ve received compliments on for years - then she went and got married to a super fellow, David Nickerson, and they had a baby and then another just recently to the point that she was no longer able to keep up with the number of changes and additions we were making to not only the website, but the new store that is on it as well. “I can’t do it anymore.” “I’ll come over and hold the babies.” I countered, in hopes of avoiding change in a subject in which I knew less than nothing. “How many times have you held a baby?” “More times than I’ve designed a website.” She laughed, and I could hear one of her babies in the background. “You hire somebody.” “What if they’re not any good?” “Then you fire them and get somebody else.” “Sounds harder than babies.” I listened as she readjusted the child in her lap. “Believe me, it’s not.” Youth to the rescue again as Kim Jacobsen told us about her family member, Paul Birkholz, over in Sheridan who did web design. Well, to make a long story even longer, the new version of the website is up and running with new items in the store, the Fifty-Two Pickup year-long Q&A from the Facebook Longmire Book Club is coming, live feed from Facebook, links to Twitter and Instagram, and bold new graphics from the fine folks over at Cinematic Images. I could tell you about all the new stuff on the website, but it’s probably easier for you to mosey on over and give the place a look-see on your own… www.craigallenjohnson.com One of the things that hasn’t changed is the CONTACT button on the website that directs you to my personal email at the ranch. Folks are consistently amazed that they can still reach me personally through my website and surprised that after all these years it’s still me that writes them back when they email me. Sure, I get a few cranks, but the majority of messages from readers are truly wonderful, and I wouldn’t trade them for the anonymity of professional insulation for anything. Happy Holidays everybody and don’t forget to remind your friends who haven’t to sign up at the new website for this year’s Longmire Christmas Story, Who’s Your Daddy? We will be shipping out the story to all the Post-It Newsletter members on Christmas morning. Tell them not to worry about us abusing their inbox in that as you can tell we barely know how to hit send… See you on the trail, Craig PS: Still plenty of time to order the stuff on the STORE including signed and personalized books and the Longmire Days 2019 signed poster, t-shirts and hats as well as the standard Sheriff hats and Red Pony attire, etc….
